  • On Friday, the Westlake High color guard offered a donation-based gift wrapping service outside JCPenney at Prien Lake Mall to raise funds for their international competition in Ohio, where the 12-member team needs about $15,000 for travel, fees, and hotel costs. The service will continue every weekend through Christmas Eve with help from parents and student volunteers—providing local shoppers a calm break amid the busy day.  The American Press

  • A Lake Charles family is grieving after their dog was killed in a hit-and-run on Kirby Street earlier this week as 14-year-old Reed Edwards and his mother urged city officials at the November 25 meeting to study traffic issues and consider adding a stop sign — a measure they believe could prevent future tragedies.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Light Up the Lake returned this weekend with a new walking parade that debuted Friday along Bord du Lac Drive and ended at the lakefront amphitheater. Family holiday festivities featured Santa's workshop, live music + food trucks along with 30 to 40 local vendors offering holiday shopping.  7 KPLC
  • Today, the West Cal Event Center in Sulphur hosts the second annual Creole Christmas Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—Santa appears until noon for pictures. More than 70 local vendors, food trucks and a $5 admission (children enter free) will support festive activities including a Creole Christmas Queen Pageant for girls ages 0 to 10 that benefits The Missing Piece.  The American Press

  • Lake Charles College Prep earned its first A grade for the 2025/2026 school year after 11 years of hard work—new programs and parent involvement helped boost student performance. The school, which serves over 600 students, is adding new classrooms to admit more kids in the coming years.  7 KPLC
  • Jonathan Darbonne worked as a welder before he became a welding instructor at Sowela Technical Community College—he now helps students learn skills for good jobs. He moved from part-time teaching to a program coordinator role and plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in business to guide his classes.  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced that 949,495 Louisiana seniors will face a 9.7% increase in Medicare premiums for 2026. The hike will raise Part B costs by $17.90 to $202.90 a month — many seniors on fixed incomes may struggle with higher expenses.  The Advocate
