COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local church in Lake Charles holds a monthly food pantry for SWLA residents without SNAP benefits and has run for 20 years while seeing record demand due to the federal shutdown—over 300 people were served last Saturday. Christian World Ministries works with Second Harvest Food Bank and uses over 20 volunteers to distribute essential groceries as the holiday season nears.  Gator 99.5
  • The Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall is visiting Coushatta until Friday, Nov. 7 so residents can honor the sacrifice of over 58,000 service members from Vietnam — Coushatta Tribal Chairman Kevin Sickey said his tribe is honored to bring the moving wall for its week-long visit.  7 KPLC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire left a Sulphur family homeless this morning when flames emerged from the attic of their recently remodeled Rio Hondo home and the father suffered burns while trying to control the blaze as community members arrived to help, with the home lacking fire insurance.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music icon Clint Black will perform live in Lake Charles this Saturday, November 8 at L'Auberge Casino Resort—tickets are now on sale.  Gator 99.5
  • The LMEA State Marching Championships are taking place at McNeese State University this week with 84 bands competing from every region — free parking is available in Lot A and tickets cost $15 on Monday and Tuesday, dropping to $10 on Wednesday.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lake Charles’ Whataburger will host a study break event for McNeese students on Tuesday, December 2nd, offering free food, music, and fun activities from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Students can register for a chance to win free Whataburger for a year and receive honey butter chicken biscuits with their McNeese ID.  Gator 99.5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Cameron Parish judge ruled on October 10th that state regulators must consider the coastal impacts on communities in poverty and local fishers before approving the LNG plant permit, which halted construction for the project proposed by Commonwealth LNG near Lake Charles. State officials vowed to appeal the ruling while federal regulators extended the construction deadline to the end of 2031 — a move that highlights rising legal and environmental scrutiny of the LNG buildout.  The Advocate
  • On November 3rd, the Calcasieu Local Emergency Planning Committee urged residents to review their emergency plan+ they stressed that updating preparedness measures will be key for future emergencies.  7 KPLC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local physical therapist showed 7NEWS how to warm up before cold weather workouts by demonstrating simple exercises + stretches to prepare the body and reduce injury risks. He explained that these techniques can help viewers safely exercise in colder conditions.  7 KPLC
  • Doctor Colin Laughlin said a good warmup stretch that activates the hip flexors and hamstrings is key to boosting blood flow before cold weather workouts. Jeff See explained that proper breathing—breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth—and good jogging posture will help prevent long-term issues.  7 KPLC
  • On Saturday, November 8th, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will host the Out of the Darkness Walk at Burton Coliseum, with check-in starting at 9 a.m. — all funds raised will aid suicide prevention education, research, advocacy and support for loss survivors.  7 KPLC

  • The new-look Cowgirls routed Pensacola Christian 100-38 in the annual Kids’ Game Monday at Townsley Law Arena—each of the 12 players scored—before they prepare to face Alabama Thursday at 6 p.m. at Coleman Coliseum.  The American Press
