COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lake Charles City Council approved a site on the former Capital One Tower for a 250,000-square-foot indoor sports complex by a 4—3 vote yesterday. The new facility will host basketball, volleyball, and pickleball tournaments and may add an indoor walking track—possibly convertible to a skating rink—to boost community recreation and regional tourism.  Gator 99.5
  • The final Lake Charles Gun & Knife Show of 2025 will be held inside the Lake Charles Event Center’s Exhibition Hall on November 8th and 9th, offering gun enthusiasts a last chance before Christmas to buy, sell, or trade top brands while completing on-site background checks. Entry is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under — providing an accessible opportunity for collectors and shooters.  Gator 99.5
  • A local pantry stepped up on Oct. 29 by offering extra food and supplies to residents facing shutdown struggles—efforts meant to support community members as local businesses continue to close.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder will host a 360-foot replica of the Vietnam Wall—along with the Cost of Freedom exhibit honoring over 58,000 service members—for free from November 3rd to November 7th. The memorial will be open 24 hours a day so visitors can pay their respects and learn about the sacrifices of fallen heroes.  Gator 99.5
  • Westlake High Theatre students perform Villain Revue today at 7 p.m. at 1000 Garden Drive, offering a 45-minute interactive show with 12 actors who design their own costumes and sets based on fairy tale characters. Months of street shows and meet-and-greets led to this production — tickets cost $10 and cash is no longer accepted — ensuring family-friendly entertainment.  The American Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana reported it has 114,000 available jobs but only 90,000 unemployed workers. State and regional leaders met in West Monroe yesterday and Secretary Susana Schowen said employers must be listened to for new training programs—Meta jobs are among the opportunities coming soon.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at McNeese State University launched a Turning Point USA chapter on Oct. 29—marking a new effort to engage campus political views, with plans for future meetings and events.  7 KPLC
  • St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles is building a new 42-acre campus on Corbina Road that is nearly three times larger than its old site, with plans for a new academic building, library, gym and athletic fields. The project is funded by a $32.2 million FEMA grant — along with funds from the school’s capital campaign — and is expected to be completed in spring as the old campus is demolished for the St. Nicholas Center for Children.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lake Charles City Council approved a plan to build a 250000 square foot indoor sports facility at the Hertz Tower site in downtown after a close 4 to 3 vote on Tuesday. The $30 million project must be completed by August and will offer sports courts, an indoor walking track, and a fitness center + it must meet HUD deadlines and environmental reviews.  The American Press

  • On Tuesday, SW La. prep volleyball teams played district and non-district matches where Southside beat Sulphur, Westlake defeated Jennings, and Iowa secured a win in Division III contests. Officials recorded scores and key stats for each game + several schools had tight, competitive matches.  The American Press
  • Bill Armstrong will make his head coaching debut on Monday as he takes over McNeese State after Will Wade stepped down—he overcame a tough time at LSU and is ready for a fresh start. Fans look forward to his new approach as the team continues its strong run in the NCAA Tournament.  The American Press
