  • Lake Charles’ DeWanna Tarver was named a 2025 Angel Award winner by the Louisiana Blue Foundation for her work providing school essentials to children in Calcasieu Parish. Tarver runs DeWanna’s Closet, which supplies uniforms, shoes and hygiene items and now distributes weekly bags of food to students in need.  7 KPLC

  • Gene Simmons took the stage at the LAuberge Casino Resort on February 20th, 2024 & performed for eager Kiss fans in Lake Charles.  Gator 99.5
  • A local Cajun restaurant taught 7NEWS how to make seafood gumbo yesterday in honor of National Seafood Month—showing its traditional cooking techniques and ingredients to capture the local flavor.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SOWELA Technical Community College will begin registration for its 2026 Spring semester on Monday, October 27th across all four campuses—students must schedule an advising appointment, and new students should complete their FAFSA before classes start on Monday, Jan. 12th. This process helps ensure students choose the right courses for their career goals.  7 KPLC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Representatives with For a Better Bayou were escorted out of the 21st Americas LNG Summit at L’Auberge Casino on Monday after holding a demonstration at Israel LaFleur Park to show how LNG expansion harms local fishermen — they later met briefly with LDCE Secretary Dustin Davison.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire officials said a train malfunction caused several small fires near homes in Vinton and Sulphur, reminding residents that a burn ban is in effect across the five-parish region to prevent open burning. They warned that breaking the ban could lead to a $600 fine or six months in jail — officials noted that even rain will not automatically lift the ban.  7 KPLC
  • Louisiana farmers face challenges as the federal shutdown that began Oct. 1 has left them without USDA loans, market reports, or conservation program support, forcing them to continue planting cover crops while planning next season with limited government aid—farmers say the math just doesn't work. This situation has increased their costs and uncertainty amid low commodity prices.  The Advocate

  • Patients in North Lake Charles will soon have access to a new health services facility that will expand treatment options. Health officials report that the center is nearing completion and will open after final checks are completed.  7 KPLC
