COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Movies Under The Stars continues today with a screening of The Incredibles at Mallard Junction Park starting at 6:30 p.m.—families should arrive early with blankets and chairs to secure good spots and enjoy free popcorn and cotton candy.  Gator 99.5
  • Lastie Skinner, a father of nine from DeQuincy, celebrated his 100th birthday this week and said that treating people right is his secret to a long, happy life. He has helped his community for over 50 years by giving free rides and caring for others—his story inspires local residents.  7 KPLC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Commonwealth LNG requested a four-year extension from FERC to finish its export facility in Cameron Parish because delays under the Biden administration and legal challenges from environmental groups slowed progress, moving its deadline from November 17th, 2027 to December 31st, 2031.  The American Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music icon Travis Tritt is set to perform live in Lake Charles today at 8:30 p.m. at the Golden Nugget's Grand Event Center—an event expected to draw local fans.  Gator 99.5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Climate Prediction Center said weak La Niña conditions emerged in September and will persist until the Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov. 30—experts said the late start makes major impacts unlikely on the Gulf and Caribbean. They added that if these conditions extend into the next season, storm activity could increase.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USPS announced a change that will shut Louisiana post offices on October 13—mail delivery will pause with only Priority Mail Express arriving until regular service resumes on October 14. The delivery change is part of the USPS plan to modernize its network and improve service in the region.  Gator 99.5

SPORTS NEWS

  • McNeese Rodeo Team is returning to Burton Coliseum later this month to host the 70th annual Cowboy Classic, starting with a Halloween Rodeo on Oct 23 at 8 p.m. and followed by competitions on Oct 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct 25 at 5 p.m.—proceeds will support student-athlete scholarships, travel and supplies.  7 KPLC
  • High school football district play starts this week for many teams in Southwest Louisiana with games set at 7 p.m., and the Game of the Week pits Westlake + St. Louis. KPLC will show scores, standings and highlights on Thursday on Nightcast and Friday on Touchdown Live.  7 KPLC
  • LSU will travel to Nashville on October 18th to face Vanderbilt at a scheduled kickoff time of either 11:00 a.m. or 11:45 a.m.—the unusual start will reduce time for traditional tailgating.  Gator 99.5
  • Since last semester ended, McNeese’s athletic department received $11.025 million in funding—including a 15-year, $4.5 million naming rights deal for the basketball arena. Athletic Director Heath Schroyer said the department is now financially stable after clearing a $3 million debt and plans to keep growing with more community support.  The American Press
