  • Lake Charles motorists face heavy delays on busy roads including Nelson Road and the narrow I-10 bridge due to long-term construction and a surge in vehicles. Commuters from Moss Bluff and Westlake may experience longer trips as the Westlake exit is closed Westbound—drivers are advised to take alternate routes.  Gator 99.5
  • Neighbors on Nextdoor voted Lake Charles’ top ten neighborhoods for their quiet streets and friendly vibes—voters noted areas like Sunnyside Addition and Country Club Road, and locals can start posts if their area was left out.  Gator 99.5
  • Today, Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder begins a four-day carnival offering free family fun with rides, games, and food vendors—families may also purchase ride-all-day wristbands for $30 as the event runs through October 12.  Gator 99.5

  • La Rumba Moss Bluff announced on Facebook that a Mexican buffet is coming soon to its location at 173 US 171 in Moss Bluff. The buffet will offer favorite dishes—quesadillas and steak fajitas—and add a fresh option to local dining.  Gator 99.5

CRIME NEWS

  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and local advocates report that 51 intimate partner deaths occurred in Louisiana in the past year, warning that leaving an abusive relationship is dangerous since 75% of women are killed during that time & noting that shelter bed capacity has nearly doubled since 2021.  7 KPLC
  • McNeese State University and local law enforcement opened a criminal investigation on Wednesday after learning of an alleged hazing involving Kappa Sigma Fraternity—no further details have been released.  The American Press
  • McNeese State University officials said they are investigating an alleged hazing incident at the Kappa Sigma house that occurred at 5:25 p.m. Oct. 7 and that the McNeese Police Department is working with local law enforcement while the university conducts an internal probe.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Glasses will clink as McNeese State University hosts the Banner Series’ Rouge et Blanc event on Saturday from 3—6 p.m., where local chefs and wine experts offer ordering options to raise funds for area arts and education programs.  The American Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calcasieu Parish 4-H Program celebrated National 4-H Week beginning Oct. 8—local leaders say they will host more events in the coming days to support youth learning and agricultural programs in the parish. The celebration highlights active community involvement through hands-on education and agricultural projects.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lake Charles City Council deferred a vote on Mayor Simien’s plan for an indoor sports complex at the former Capital One Tower site Tuesday night—Council Vice President Ronnie Harvey Jr. was absent, and the council will vote on the resolution Oct. 15 as members weigh the project’s costs and benefits for a low-income area.  The American Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • McNeese Athletics announced on Wednesday that single-game basketball tickets for the upcoming season are on sale—fans can purchase them at the ticket office inside the Jack V Doland Field House or by calling 337-562-4678.  Gator 99.5
  • The Westlake Rams started the season strong with three wins but lost the last two games and will face St. Louis Catholic this week—coach John Richardson said they must play with more intensity and cut mistakes to get back on track.  7 KPLC
