COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Calcasieu Parish Public Library announced that the Epps Memorial Library will reopen at its original location, 1320 N. Simmons St., on Monday, Oct. 13—after closing its temporary site today to prepare for the move. The renovated library now features modern technology and meeting rooms and will host a grand opening celebration in early November.  The American Press
  • The local fire department named a brave little girl with a rare brain tumor fire chief for a day on October 6—she toured the station and learned how firefighters work.  7 KPLC
  • Flea Fest returns to Lake Charles this November 15 and 16 at Burton Coliseum Complex’s Event Barn on Gulf Highway—offering hundreds of booths with antiques, vintage treasures, crafts, and food trucks for a fun family outing.  Gator 99.5
  • On October 11, Wheels of Hope will hold a charity bike ride at Sam Houston Jones State Park to benefit the St. Nicholas Center for Children. Organized by St. Theodore Holy Family Catholic Church, the event offers routes of 10, 25, 46, or 58 miles — registration is $50 per person.  7 KPLC

  • Lake Charles is set to host a live Wheel of Fortune event in November where audience members—selected randomly—will spin a replica wheel and solve puzzles to win a grand prize of $10,000 in cash plus vacation prizes like trips to Paris and Hawaii.   • Locals recalled favorite Lake Charles bars from their youth, remembering spots like Miss Kitties — John's Barn and others as they shared nostalgic memories over the radio and on social media. EDUCATION NEWS

  • SOWELA Community College saw a historic 20% enrollment increase over the past year—administrators say the boost shows strong demand for its programs.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown has left nearly 40% of Louisiana’s federal workers unpaid and may lead to longer airport waits and limited park services—affecting Lake Charles residents. Lawmakers must pass a spending bill soon to restore normal operations.  Gator 99.5
  • During National Fire Prevention Week, the Lake Charles Fire Department shared fire safety tips including practicing home drills and safely using space heaters by advising residents to plug them directly into wall outlets + keeping combustible materials three feet away to protect homes.  7 KPLC
  • City officials in Lake Charles are still debating the location for a new sports complex among three sites, including two on Fitzenreiter Road that won a federal grant requiring the site to be in a low to moderate income area — council members will vote on the preferred site at tomorrow’s 5:30 p.m. meeting.  7 KPLC
  • The United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a ruling that declared Louisiana’s Ten Commandments Law unconstitutional—a law that requires the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public classroom—and Attorney General Liz Murrill said the case will be reheard en banc with a date for arguments not yet set.  7 KPLC

  • Today, during Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month, Project Trey Recovery Cafe in Lake Charles offers hope to residents overcoming addiction with stories from individuals like Bradon Soileau. The center—created in memory of Trey—provides support and resources for those facing substance and mental health challenges.  7 KPLC
