BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Bekery in Lake Charles is showcasing fall flavors with an autumn salad made of butternut squash, cranberries, spiced candied nuts + a new pumpkin cheesecake New York roll. Chef Estevahn Cadena said the restaurant will bring back its classic muffaletta for brunch next week while its traditional French-style coffee continues to charm customers.  7 KPLC
  • Plans for an online shotgun shell assembly business near Hathaway received preliminary approval from the Jeff Davis Police Jury’s zoning commission and will move to a full police jury vote after a 5 p.m. public hearing on Wednesday, October 8—held in the meeting room at 304 N. State Street in Jennings. Damon Hebert intends to operate the business online from a property on La. 26, located 1.75 miles from Hathaway High School while meeting all state fire and safety codes.  The American Press

  • A tribute video from Nickie Demarie Lucas honors John's Barn on 18th Street in Lake Charles—opened on October 3 and known for its red wooden exterior, uneven floors, and the warm welcome from Mr—Glenn. The video revives memories for locals of the unique bar that charmed customers with its memorable jukebox tunes and handwritten napkin jokes.  Gator 99.5
  • This October, family-friendly Halloween and fall events will take place across SWLA in cities like Lake Charles, Sulphur, Westlake and DeQuincy, featuring safe trick or treating, haunted attractions and pet costume contests.   • Country singer Joe Nichols will headline Cowboy Christmas at Le Bocage in Lake Charles on December 5, with the event running December 5 to December 6. The festival will offer live music + a holiday market along with family activities such as a photo with Southern Santa.  Gator 99.5
  • Movies Under the Stars returned yesterday at 6:30 p.m. at Prien Lake Park as families watched How to Train Your Dragon and enjoyed free cotton candy and popcorn—this series will continue every Friday with films like The Incredibles, Big Hero 6 and Wicked, with cancellations announced in case of bad weather.  Gator 99.5
  • Lake Charles will host many concerts in October at venues like Golden Nugget, L’Auberge, and Lake Charles Event Center—today's shows feature Cody Jinks and Steelshot while other dates include acts such as Travis Tritt, Jamey Johnson, and Blackberry Smoke. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Suzy Solari, 51, has spent nearly two decades teaching third grade at ICCS—the school where she grew up—and also serves as the safety coordinator overseeing emergency protocols. A moment at her nephew’s basketball game redirected her from nursing to education, and she now blends lessons in faith with core classroom skills while honoring her father’s legacy.  The American Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana state officials announced that southern flounder fishing will be banned from Oct. 15 to Nov. 30 so that mature females can spawn—helping efforts to rehabilitate the overfished species. An assessment showed that catches have dropped from over 300,000 pounds to around 100,000 while some anglers and biologists reported modest improvements in 2024.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local organizers are set to host the annual 'Out of the Darkness' Walk to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention — inviting community members to join the event. Further details on the route and schedule will be announced soon in Lake Charles.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cowboys host Southeastern today at Navarre Stadium at 6 p.m. as they try to end a four-game losing streak under coach Matt Viator. The team hopes a win before their bye week will boost their momentum—helping to tighten both offense and defense.  The American Press
  • The McNeese Cowboys are set to face the Southeastern Lions tomorrow at The Hole at 6:00 p.m. after not winning a game since their season opener against Louisiana Christian—Lions hold a 3—2 record following a strong win last week.  Gator 99.5
