- ➤ Residents will have a chance to honor fallen soldiers when the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall and Cost of Freedom Memorial arrives at Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder from November 3 to 7 in time for Veterans Day. The exhibit features military memorabilia and will include motorcades, commemorative ceremonies, and educational programs — a unique opportunity for the community to remember local heroes. - ➤ The Calcasieu Parish Policy Jury is hosting the Movies Under the Stars series with four free outdoor screenings in October. The events begin Friday, Oct. 3 at Prien Lake Park at 6:30 p.m. with the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon—one of several films chosen to bring families together in spacious park settings. - ➤ The Krewe of Illusions will host Illusions of Darkness: A Vampire Ball in Lake Charles to feature gothic decor and themed activities as it launches its Mardi Gras season with plans to crown a new king and queen — 35 general admission tickets remain available online and at Rhinestones and Vows. 7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nearly one hundred employers set up in McNeese State University’s Recreation Complex today for its annual fall Career Expo and students met recruiters face-to-face for internships and full-time positions—organizers say the event builds networking skills and boosts confidence. 7 KPLC
- ➤ A 2024 audit report by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor found that more than $20,000 may have been misused by three Calcasieu schools in fall 2023. Investigators are looking into LaGrange High and Kaufman Elementary—no charges were brought at Sulphur High due to weak evidence. The American Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On October 1, the Louisiana Department of Health began administering SNAP under Project One Door legislation to reduce paperwork and wait times for families—eligibility remains unchanged. The department also took over services from DCFS, including Disability Determination Services and the Electronic Healthy Incentives Project, to streamline state benefit programs. The American Press
- ➤ The federal shutdown has halted NFIP from issuing new flood insurance policies while current policies remain active; local experts advise policyholders to contact their insurance agents & lenders about renewing coverage. Sen. Bill Cassidy said he is working on separate legislation to reauthorize the program if no new budget is passed. 7 KPLC
- ➤ After more than four hours of debate, the City Council voted to continue reviewing two sites—one the old Capital One property and the other a donation from the Greater St. Mary Church Foundation—as potential locations for a 25,000 square-foot indoor sports complex funded by a $30 million HUD grant. 7 KPLC
- ➤ Since the federal government shutdown began Oct 1, many Louisiana residents have faced furloughs, delayed pay for federal workers and military, and a freeze on flood insurance that hinders home sales in flood zones—essential services are on hold.
