- ➤ Lake Charles officials discussed plans to build a new sports complex with options in Gossport or downtown—local leaders believe the project will boost sports and recreation opportunities. They will review community feedback and studies before making a final decision soon. 7 KPLC
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A program at Sam Houston trains students in peer support to help peers through crises and prevent suicide—its model has spread across the state, with leaders also lobbying for laws to collect teen mental health data. 7 KPLC
- ➤ A group of SWLA teens provided peer support and advocated for suicide prevention after receiving training in local schools. They will host more sessions to help peers and share their experiences + work with community leaders to spread awareness about mental health. 7 KPLC
- ➤ This month, five-year-old McKinli Bauer begins a clinical trial in Seattle for a rare brain cancer called DIPG. Her family hopes the treatment will extend her life—they will check her progress by October 3 and plan a Music Bingo event on October 18. 7 KPLC
