COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After Hurricane Laura destroyed its building in 2020, KPLC celebrated 70 years by holding a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday—yesterday—that unveiled its new studio on Division Street and showed its commitment to rebuild and serve Lake Charles.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lake Charles Air Base began as a rice paddy when construction started in August 1941 and became a flying school by March 16, training over 2,000 cadets during World War II. It was deactivated in October 1946 and reactivated in early spring for the Korean War, later shifting to jet training in the mid-1950s—highlighting its role as a key local military site.  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Comedian Desi Banks led a workout event at Project Fit in Lake Charles ahead of his show at the Rosa Hart Theatre this weekend (he said group fitness boosts long-term health) and his team worked with local gym owner Allie Davis to organize the session.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • McNeese State lost 34 to 17 to Stephen F. Austin at Homer Bryce Stadium on Saturday as the Cowboys fumbled key drives and gave up three turnovers that cost them a chance at an upset & marked their first loss in the stadium since 2011.  The American Press
  • On Sept. 25, SW Louisiana prep football games ended with Welsh beating South Beauregard 54-13, LaGrange scoring 60 in non-district play, Vinton winning 20-16 over Delcambre, Elton defeating Gueydan 49-0, and Grand Lake topping Montgomery 62-34—players like Ja’Kyrin Woodard and Makelin Lemoine led key plays.  The American Press
  • On Friday, Sam Houston opened District 3-5A play with a 34 to 14 win over rival Sulphur as seniors E.J. Hanney and Gavin Breaux led the Broncos to more than 500 yards of total offense. The team's defense forced three turnovers (limiting Sulphur to 254 yards) as it prepares to host Lafayette next week.  The American Press
  • Welsh coach Ronnie Courville switched junior Ja’Kyrin Woodard from linebacker to running back this season—he set a school record with 302 rushing yards on 25 carries in a 54-13 win over South Beauregard. Courville said the change highlights Woodard’s elite speed and strength as the Greyhounds prepare for their next home game.  The American Press
  • The Gumbeaux Gators are starting a new era in Lake Charles as team leaders describe upcoming changes as a 'diamond in the rough' that will alter operations for the next season.  7 KPLC
