- ➤ Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry plans to expand its Corporate Boulevard location by adding a watch repair workshop — increasing its space by about 400 to 500 square feet and hiring a second watchmaker — to meet rising repair demand; the project is expected to complete by spring pending permit approval. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ McNeese State University is selling season passes for its 2025—2026 theatre season that features three award-winning productions, including Buried Child, Next to Normal and The Flick. Passes cost $40, individual tickets cost $20 and students attend free with a valid ID. 7 KPLC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ McNeese State University was named one of the best regional universities in the South by U.S. News & World Report for the 15th consecutive year as part of the 2026 Best Colleges edition. The school continues to boost enrollment and upgrade its campus with a new student union expected by year-end — a follow-up to major rebuilding after the 2020 hurricanes. Gator 99.5
- ➤ Henry Heights Elementary School in Lake Charles has added a communication board for students with hearing challenges or who are nonverbal to share their needs, and a speech-language pathologist said it helps students communicate during recess and class—improving interaction. The board uses visual symbols and words and has been in place for about a month. 7 KPLC

- ➤ A new LDWF report (released on Sept. 25) shows that sediment buildup is linked to a higher mortality rate on oyster beds in Big Lake. 7 KPLC
- ➤ Tropical Storm Humberto formed east of the Leeward Islands on Wednesday and is now near a tropical wave over the Caribbean—forecasters say this rare Fujiwhara effect may make the storm’s track harder to predict. Forecast models show Humberto will reach major hurricane strength by Monday while experts expect Louisiana to remain largely shielded. The Advocate

- ➤ 911 emergency lines across Mississippi and Louisiana were down yesterday due to damaged fiber optic lines reported by AT&T. Crews worked to repair the system — local law enforcement advised residents to use alternative numbers for emergencies. The American Press
- ➤ Louisiana leaders are pushing to lower drug prices by limiting the power of pharmacy middlemen — they awarded most of next year’s state health plan work to Louisiana firm Liviniti while reducing work for CVS. The state has also filed lawsuits against CVS for alleged unfair practices after Gov. Landry’s attempt to ban PBM ownership failed. The Advocate
