- ➤ The Junior League of Lake Charles invites residents to spend Saturday engaging in acts of kindness to boost unity in the community. More than 538 members will serve at places like Cal-Cam Hospital and the Children’s Museum — supporting the theme 'The Heart of Service, The Power of Women' while uplifting neighbors throughout the region. - ➤ Lake Charles is hosting the Louisiana Food & Wine Festival, a celebration of the region’s rich cuisine that brings together celebrity chefs, live music and food awards. Today at 6:30—8:30 p.m. the festival features Fire on the Lake at Bord du Lac Park while Saturday’s Grand Tasting and Sunday Jazz Brunch will offer more food and drink experiences. The American Press
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana unemployment benefits will increase from $275 to $282 weekly while employer taxes drop as the taxable wage base lowers from $7,700 to $7,000 and the unemployment fund grows to nearly $1.2 billion by August; the changes will take effect Jan. 1 and are expected to cut business tax burdens by 9—10 percent. This update follows state actions based on improved economic forecasts of unemployment claims. The Advocate

- ➤ The Beauregard Parish Police Jury approved a bid with Bayou Fire Protection for $47,000 to renovate the interior fire suppression system at the Beauregard Covered Arena and authorized vendor contracts for Worship in the Boot scheduled on Oct. 11—honoring Dalton Isbell's retirement after 35 years and choosing Charles Randall Brown to complete a fire district board term. - ➤ Today, Sen. Cassidy announced that $122,112,519 will fund the Calcasieu-Sabine Marsh Restoration project — a plan to build drainage structures, improve channels and create about 400 acres of new marsh in the Cameron-Creole Watershed. 7 KPLC

- ➤ High school football Week 3 is underway as Hamilton Christian hosts Vinton in the featured game and all contests start at 7 p.m. KPLC will update scores, standings and watch highlights on Thursday via Nightcast and on Friday via Touchdown Live—keeping local fans informed about SWLA high school football. 7 KPLC
- ➤ Logan Mauldin is a tight end for McNeese and wrote two children’s books before high school — he self-published his first book with help from his mom after watching a TV show on reading differences. He also started a program to help kids write their own books and continues to show how sports and writing work together. 7 KPLC
- ➤ McNeese State’s men’s basketball team will begin workouts Monday at 4 p.m. in the Legacy Center under coach Bill Armstrong while welcoming transfer Garway Dual, and the women’s team will start practice Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. under new coach Ayla Guzzardo—both teams will open on Nov. 3 with hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament.
