  • Louisiana health officials reported 22 cases of the flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus this year — including four deaths and one death in a Florida resident from undercooked oysters, with about 82 percent linked to water exposure. Officials warned that warm Gulf waters help the bacteria spread quickly and urged residents to be cautious when swimming or eating shellfish.  The Advocate
  • Before Labor Day, the Louisiana Department of Health alerted residents about high levels of enterococci bacteria at several beaches, closing Lake Charles South Beach—other sites remain under advisory as of Aug. 28.
