Officials warned that warm Gulf waters help the bacteria spread quickly and urged residents to be cautious when swimming or eating shellfish.

Before Labor Day, the Louisiana Department of Health alerted residents about high levels of enterococci bacteria at several beaches, closing Lake Charles South Beach—other sites remain under advisory as of Aug.
