COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Lake Charles invites residents to support local schools by donating new and unused hygiene items for back-to-school needs. Donations will be accepted at City Hall — 326 Pujo St. — from Aug. 25 to Sept. 15 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The American Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Calcasieu Correctional Center booked 18 individuals on Aug. 21 for charges such as aggravated assault, domestic abuse, drug offenses, and negligent homicide—details that span Lake Charles, Sulphur, Houston, and other nearby areas.  7 KPLC
  • Derik Kendall Rayborn—who attacked his former girlfriend and killed her son and a dog on New Year's Day, 2024 while she tried to protect herself—was sentenced to life plus 50 years in prison in Lake Charles.  7 KPLC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State regulators reported that Cavern 2-4-5 at the Sulphur Mines salt dome lost pressure on August 22 and officials are preparing with the well operator for possible repairs — though the drop is not yet impacting stability.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 20, the Lake Charles City Council unanimously nominated three individuals—Kevin Guidry, Ernest Broussard, and Jay Kumar—for the seven-member Harbor and Terminal District Board that oversees the Port. Guidry, the board's sitting president, said he looks forward to enhancing public communication and driving projects like the Woodside Energy LNG project that will boost local jobs and investment.  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • LifeShare needs Type O donors urgently as summer blood donations drop by about 20% to support patients in need and donors who give blood or red cells at LifeShare sites in Louisiana, East Texas, and South Arkansas through Sept. 9 will receive a $25 eGift card reward.  The American Press
