COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank expanded its disaster relief network on August 21 by opening disaster-ready distribution centers in Lake Charles and Houma—completing a four-warehouse system to quickly deliver food during the predicted active hurricane season.  The American Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Calcasieu Correctional Center booked several individuals on Aug.20 for crimes including battery, aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, and additional charges—suspects include residents from Lake Charles as well as those from nearby areas.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southwest Louisiana will receive over $1 million in funding from the bipartisan Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act for airport improvements, with funds allocated for runway resealing at Beauregard Regional, pavement rehabilitation at Chennault International, and design of a new drainage system at Oakdale Airport — part of a larger $5,225,066 package for the state. This funding was announced by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. for use in local airport upgrades.  7 KPLC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA warned Walmart shoppers in Lake Charles to check Great Value frozen raw shrimp in two-pound bags for radioactive Cesium—one sample tested positive though levels are low, and long-term exposure may raise cancer risk.  Gator 99.5

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Cowboys defense showed strong progress last season and is mixing new players with veterans for a better team this year. The group led by safety Javon Davis and defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro will build on their practice success at scrimmages on Saturday—preparing for the season ahead.  The American Press
