CRIME NEWS

  • Louisiana authorities warn that a scam is targeting residents by using phone calls that falsely claim to come from the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office—scammers use the name of Chief Deputy Jared Morton to allege an arrest warrant and demand money; officials advise residents to verify any such calls by contacting the office directly.  Gator 99.5
  • Lake Charles police arrested 18-year-old John Orphy IV and 19-year-old Jakeelan Jamarcus Freeman for a shooting on Anita Drive on July 27 that left one person injured; they face charges of assault by drive-by shooting, aggravated battery, illegal use of weapons, and aggravated criminal damage to property.  7 KPLC
  • Lake Charles police said two individuals have been charged in connection with a shooting on Anita Drive—details remain under investigation.  7 KPLC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana does not have its own minimum wage law so workers rely on the federal rate of $7.25 per hour under the Fair Labor Standards Act—tipped workers may earn as little as $2.13 per hour if their tips meet the required minimum, and efforts in the state legislature to raise wages have repeatedly failed.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese State University welcomed veterans today at an orientation that offered financial aid information and campus support for future Pokes—refreshments and tokens of appreciation were provided to acknowledge their service.  7 KPLC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over the weekend, bike riders took part in Ride for Tomorrow to talk about suicide prevention and mental health in the Lake area—participants shared stories of loss and urged families to talk more about their feelings. One father who lost his son and others said they want more help to support those in need.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas Tech transfer quarterback Jake Strong earned the starting job for the McNeese Cowboys and will lead the team in their season opener against Louisiana Christian on August 30th at Navarre Stadium—he beat out junior Alex Flores and redshirt freshman Devin Lippold for the role.  7 KPLC
  • Oberlin High School has added four players to its varsity football team after a meeting on Aug. 17, bringing the roster to 19—coach Curt Ware said that injuries may force game cancellations if numbers drop.  7 KPLC
