  • Ride Towards Tomorrow is a community cycling event set for Saturday, August 16 in Lake Charles that honors Bryce River Waldrop with proceeds benefiting the Bryce River Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Participants can choose from multiple ride options and use a VIP shopping experience at Crying Eagle Brewing Company at 1165 E McNeese Street—offering access to mental health support.  7 KPLC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vehicle accident closed I-10W near the Iowa exit on August 13th—motorists were diverted to LA-383—and heavy congestion stretched to Lacassine, causing delays for local drivers.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Block Off Broadway will perform the play Misery at The Strand Theatre in Jennings starting tomorrow at 7 p.m., with extra showings on August 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24 and tickets costing $12—$10 for seniors. The production honors Stephen King's thriller by featuring the iconic fake leg scene that brought the story to life.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lake Charles will host the Tournament of the Stars at the Golden Nugget Country Club this weekend—featuring a Black & White Sneaker Ball on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and a Celebrity Golf event on Monday with registration at 7:15 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. The event benefits the McReynolds Scholarship Foundation which supports every high school in Calcasieu Parish.  7 KPLC
  • Our Lady Queen of Heaven School held its First Day of School Rally Tuesday at the Family Life Community Center Gym—students, parents and staff gathered in prayer to start the 2025-26 school year with a theme of reflecting the light of Christ as Principal Trevor Donnelly encouraged respect and unity; upcoming events include a carnival, spring talent show and 250 Years of Celebration.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health paid about $9.6M in monthly Medicaid premiums for over 1,000 deceased beneficiaries between February 2019 and March 2025—an audit found 1,072 cases of improper eligibility that led to continued payments. The department said it will add new data checks and work with the U.S. Department of Treasury to obtain the Social Security Administration Death Master File to prevent future errors.  The American Press
  • Chief Judge Cynthia Clay Guillory celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Judicial Complex in downtown Lake Charles, marking the end of a 20-year process to create a modern 108,000-square-foot facility that will consolidate all district court operations. Construction will take nearly two and a half years, and once complete the old court building will be demolished to create Calcasieu Square — a public green space linking Lakeshore Drive and Ryan Street.  The American Press
