- ➤ Ride Towards Tomorrow is a cycling event scheduled for Aug 16 at Crying Eagle Brewing to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention—participants can choose from multiple routes including family and advanced options, and all proceeds will benefit the Bryce River Foundation. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lake Charles Police reported that three suspects were charged after an overnight shooting on June 21 in the 100 block of West McNeese Street that left two people hospitalized—investigators continue to review evidence. 7 KPLC
- ➤ An 18-year-old Lake Charles man, Dominic White, is accused of murdering 20-year-old Johnjose Connor Welsh when shots were fired outside On The Rocks on Aug. 2 at about 3 a.m.—White was arrested on Aug. 8 at a trailer park and now faces charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons. 7 KPLC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students began their first day of school in Calcasieu and Jeff Davis parishes as staff at Vinton High School completed final preparations—Kaley Frith observed the morning setup before classes started. 7 KPLC
- ➤ A 12-week EMT course is now enrolling in Lake Charles to train future emergency responders; interested applicants are encouraged to register soon for a program focused on hands-on skills. 7 KPLC
- ➤ Calcasieu Parish and Jeff Davis Parishes are preparing for the start of the new school year as school districts finalize plans for classes. Officials confirmed updated academic calendars and student support measures intended to help students adjust as classes resume. 7 KPLC

- ➤ McNeese will hold its first scrimmage (a 90-minute movement scrimmage) today at 8 a.m. inside Navarre Stadium before its Aug. 30 season opener.
