  • A scavenger hunt held on Aug. 3rd engaged local youth in discovering Lake Area landmarks. Organizers planned the event to boost local learning and community involvement.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • Calcasieu Correctional Center booked nine individuals on August 3 for charges including drug offenses, trespassing, resisting an officer, and domestic abuse—arrests involving Lake Charles, Sulphur and one from Houston highlight a varied set of alleged crimes.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Education reported that 42.2% of 44,930 public school teachers were rated as highly effective for the 2023-24 school year — with Beauregard Parish at 78.4% and Madison Parish at 10.4%. Teacher scores were based equally on classroom observations and student outcomes.  The Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Coaches and student athletes were told by Dr. Michael Turner from CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital to know where the AED is kept to help in rare cases of cardiac arrest. He said spotting signs like severe shortness of breath—often paired with a racing heart—can prompt quick action and proper care.  7 KPLC
  • Health experts released new guidelines for preparing for cardiac issues in students on Aug. 3 to help school staff promptly identify warning signs and provide first aid. Local school officials say schools may update training and emergency procedures + review screening protocols to better protect student health.  7 KPLC
