- ➤ During the mid-1980s, two refiners and a chemical producer built a cogenerating plant in Westlake to cut energy costs by burning petroleum coke in a modern circulating steam generator. The $200 million plant, dedicated in 1992, produced 200 megawatts of power, reduced emissions with limestone—and later passed through several operators including Citgo, Sasol, ConocoPhillips, and Entergy. - ➤ Lake Charles Police investigated a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday near the McNeese State University Legacy Center outside On The Rocks—officers clearing the parking lot heard shots fired around 3 a.m. and later confirmed a person died from the injuries sustained. The American Press
- ➤ On August 1, 2025, Calcasieu Correctional Center in Lake Charles booked several individuals for charges including illegal use of dangerous weapons, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and domestic abuse battery with strangulation—offenses spanning multiple local jurisdictions. 7 KPLC
- ➤ A 43-year-old Lake Charles man died in a four-vehicle crash near the intersection of N. Martin Luther King Highway and Medora Street on Thursday morning at about 9:54 a.m.—police said Freddie Brown, an unrestrained passenger in a 2008 Ford Focus, died at the scene while the driver and two others were treated for injuries as investigators continue to probe the crash. - ➤ On Friday, a ribbon cutting celebrated the opening of the newly named Ralph Wilson Center of Opportunities in Calcasieu Parish, which was transformed from an elementary school into a facility for at-risk students. The school board approved the reconfiguration in April, and the center will offer academic support, credit recovery, and career training for students in grades six through 12—promising new paths for those in need.
