CRIME NEWS

  • Two Lake Charles men have been accused of firearms offenses and modifying a machine gun — authorities said the investigation is ongoing.  7 KPLC
  • Calcasieu detectives are investigating a hit and run in Westlake after a female pedestrian suffered minor injuries on Goss Road near Miller Avenue around 3 a.m. on July 22nd and are asking anyone with information to call (337) 491-3605.  7 KPLC

FINANCE NEWS

  • Insurify’s analysis shows that property insurance premiums in Louisiana will reach $13,937 by the end of this year—non-renewal rates have increased 267% since 2018. Vermilion, Lafourche and Saint Charles parishes report the highest increases as insurers adjust coverage for climate change and rising repair costs.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eligible homeowners in Calcasieu, Cameron and Vermillion parishes are invited to join a state-managed home elevation project — using 65% federal grants and 35% CPRA funds to cut hurricane risks — and one home in Lake Charles has already been raised. A second contract is expected by year-end for work that will begin in February 2026.  The American Press
  • Gov. Jeff Landry and Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple sparred over how to limit rising insurance rates in Louisiana—Landry credited legislative actions that attracted GM Insurance while Temple argued the measures did not go far enough, noting that the insurer’s decision came before the session’s pro-industry changes.  The Advocate
