ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck crashed through Tommie’s Fish Market on La. 171 just before noon on July 22nd (the building was empty) as Lake Charles Police and Acadian Ambulances arrived (reporting only minor injuries).  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calcasieu Parish School Board will cover the shortfall in USDA free lunch funding now at 85+ percent by using leftover money from last year's nutrition program so all students get free meals. After this school year, the board will assess if it can continue the program.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Calcasieu Parish’s ITEP Committee approved Indorama Ventures Olefins LLC’s ITEP application with a unanimous 3 to 0 vote Tuesday for its 2025 project at 4300 Highway 108 in Westlake. The Louisiana Board of Commerce and Industry approved the application on June 25th, and the project’s estimated capital investment is $1,786,660—Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Secretary Jennifer Wallace is now the contact for ITEP communications.  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A breastfeeding class held on July 22 in Lake Charles provided practical advice and emotional support to moms—helping them learn successful nursing techniques.  7 KPLC
  • West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital is holding a two-hour breastfeeding class for new and expecting parents that teaches latching, pumping, and signs of pain—classes cost $10 or are free for OBG-1 patients. The session runs on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. and will next be held on August 26.  7 KPLC
  • Starting November 1, 292,994 self-employed or lower-income Louisianans with Affordable Care Act plans will see their monthly premiums rise by about 15% as insurers file for rate increases. Experts warn that without the enhanced tax credits, many households may find coverage unaffordable—risking a rise in the uninsured rate.  The Advocate
