GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Act No. 288 will ban most handheld phone use while driving starting August 1, allowing only hands-free voice calls, navigation and emergency use, with violators receiving warnings until fines up to $100 or $250 in special zones take effect on January 2+ a provision stops officers from searching based solely on phone use. Bill Cassidy said the One Big Beautiful Bill Act gives working-class Americans a tax break on tips and overtime pay with eligible workers able to deduct up to $25,000 for tips and $12,500 for overtime plus the benefit applies retroactively to this season. The law phases out for higher earners and excludes jobs such as airline pilots and railroad workers.  7 KPLC
  • Congress passed the Big Beautiful Bill that increases GOMESA funding by dedicating 37.5% of offshore oil and gas royalties to Louisiana — along with Texas, Mississippi and Alabama—capping annual funds at $500 million.
