CRIME NEWS

  • Officers shot and killed a man who fired multiple rounds at them in a Lake Charles neighborhood this morning on 12th Street—911 calls reported the suspect aimed his gun at traffic before running into the area and engaging SWAT officers.  7 KPLC
  • Six Lake Charles Police officers were put on leave after a Thursday morning shooting near 12th Street and 7th Avenue when a man who pointed a gun at traffic fired at officers and armored vehicles and was fatally shot — the state police now are investigating.  The American Press
  • A shooting occurred in a Lake Charles neighborhood when Toni Thomas Simien streamed live on Facebook at the scene — no further details have been released.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Lake Charles hosts the Red, White, Blue and You festival along its downtown lakefront with a hot dog cook-off, live music, games, and food trucks as part of the launch of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. with a contest and ends at 9:15 p.m. with a fireworks display.  The American Press

  • McNeese State University will host Greek life events for fall students to help them build lasting friendships and new connections. The schedule includes Formal Sorority Recruitment and Orientation on August 24, Sorority Recruitment on August 26—29, a Divine Nine Council Caucus on September 4, and IFC Fraternity Recruitment on September 8—12.  7 KPLC
  • Calcasieu Parish schools improved their LEAP scores for the 2024-2025 school year with R.W. Vincent Elementary increasing eight points, Vinton High seven points, and DeQuincy Middle six points (grades three to twelve surpassed state averages). The state will use a revised system to calculate results for the year ahead.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana will gain up to an extra $46 million per year from offshore oil revenue if the cap is met under the new spending law signed today. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act raises the cap to $650 million per year and directs the funds to coastal protection & restoration projects.  The Advocate
