COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lake Charles residents can now nominate their favorite snow cone stand in the Snow Cone Showdown 2025 contest, which returns after a strong turnout last year. The event invites votes for vendors in any setting — nominations are currently open.  Gator 99.5
  • Today, United Way of Southwest Louisiana launched its Summer of Service program for teens aged 13 to 18 — a series of weekly projects including a Hurricane Evacuation Drill and service at Abraham’s Tent; about 120 teens have signed up so far and more spots are available.  7 KPLC
  • After five years since Hurricane Laura, the St. Nicholas Center for Children received over $3.4 million from FEMA to support its recovery. The center will use a phased plan to expand its services by buying property on Bank St. and preserving the Landry Memorial Gym — a local landmark with deep community ties.  The American Press
  • The Lake Charles Community Band will launch its free summer concert series with 'Fright Night' Monday night at the Rosa Hart Theatre—located at 900 Lakeshore Drive—with a spooky lineup featuring tunes like Michael Jackson’s Thriller and music by Danny Elfman. Later this month the band will present the 'Color Palette' show at the Tritico Theatre (4205 Ryan Street), with both events starting at 6 p.m.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Matt Sandbank’s Shadow Factory will perform a shadow puppet show called 'Wild Goose Chase' at four libraries next week for children ages 4 and older—Carnegie Memorial and Vinton libraries on June 18 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Westlake and Iowa libraries on June 20 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.—designed to teach key elements of poetry.  The American Press
  • The four-day Juneteenth Freedom Festival will begin Monday, June 16 at the MLK Recreation Center, where the Fit Family Olympics start at 9 a.m., followed by senior bingo Tuesday, a movie screening Wednesday, and a parade, cook-off, and family concerts on the final day — a celebration that honors the end of slavery and Black resilience in our community.  The American Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local farmers are on alert as the invasive New World screwworm fly (a flesh-burrowing pest) moves closer to the southern border and could force a statewide cattle quarantine if it enters. Officials warn that a return of this pest may disrupt shipments and lead to significant losses in the livestock market.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana fishers must limit wahoo catches to five per person per trip starting June 20. The rule comes from overfishing at Texas’ Flower Garden National Banks and aims to prevent stricter federal limits—LDWF will monitor landings through the LA Creel program.  The Advocate
  • Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is investigating CVS after it sent text messages urging customers to call legislators about a bill that could force 119 pharmacies to close — the company said its actions followed the law. Gov. Jeff Landry and other officials have criticized the campaign as an improper use of personal data — the investigation continues.  The Advocate
