CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, June 8th, more than 27,000 people were baptized nationwide as part of the Baptize America movement that united 650 churches across the nation. In Lake Charles, Life United Church baptized 18 members—participants said the ceremony deepened their faith and brought church communities together.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana State Legislative Session ends at 6 p.m. Thursday and several bills will await Gov. Landry’s signature. Key measures include one to raise the online sports gambling tax—expected to add $28 million a year to college athletics—and others to expand TOPS awards, extend judges' retirement age, and ban ultra-processed foods in schools.  7 KPLC
  • Scott Walker, the new president and CEO of Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, told Calcasieu Parish police jurors that the region lost population after COVID and his strategic plan launched in May will rebuild the area by investing in long-term collaboration—he stressed that the status quo must change. The police jury approved a grant resolution for the SNAP Education and Training Program and will meet again on June 26 at 5:30 p.m.  The American Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Professional women's softball will come to Sulphur this week as Athletes Unlimited Softball League holds games from June 12 to June 14 at McMurry Park — fans can watch live or on national television including Thursday’s game between the Volts and Bandits on ESPN2. The league features top college players and is backed by Major League Baseball with advisor Jennie Finch.  Gator 99.5
  • McNeese head softball coach James Landreneau said that power-hitter Corine Poncho returned to the Cowgirl softball team after missing last season to focus on her studies, and an official announcement was expected Tuesday afternoon. This move strengthens a team that finished last season 41-20 and aims to repeat as Southland Conference champions next season.  The American Press
  • McNeese State announced it will run its own NIL program after a $2.8 billion NCAA settlement was approved Tuesday, June 10, letting colleges pay student-athletes directly beginning July 1. Director Heath Schroyer said the school will keep its current scholarship numbers this year and evaluate its finances as it aims to move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision — a change that may differ from plans by other schools.  The American Press
