Good morning, Lake Charles. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local mail carriers are placing dryer sheets in mailboxes to repel wasps and yellowjackets — the sheets release a scent that bugs dislike and help protect workers and residents. The practice comes as warmer weather increases insect activity.  Gator 99.5
  • Dixie Landin’ is closing for good — park owner Sam Haynes Jr. said low attendance forced the decision — and Blue Bayou will remain closed through 2025 with plans to reopen in 2026, leaving many families in Southwest Louisiana without their summer destination.  Gator 99.5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Enrollment is now open for accelerated electrical and welding classes that begin on June 23 at the ABC Training Center—this six-month program costs $1,200. Former student Erica Coleman said the training helped her get a job, and director Blaise Theard shared more details this morning.  7 KPLC
  • Three Southwest Louisiana graduates earned their Doctor of Occupational Therapy degrees yesterday, making them among the state's first to complete this program — a landmark in local health education.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Gov. Landry said Louisiana is prepared for hurricane season that began on June 1 and urged residents to set up their own evacuation plans while National Guard vehicles & emergency equipment were stationed at the state office; he added that even with potential federal cuts, state experts will provide accurate weather updates.  7 KPLC
  • Legal Corner advises contractors that when bidding or contracting work, they must use the licensed name since LSLBC does not recognize DBAs—while it also explains that those denied Medicaid services can appeal their decision using a single filing method or request reconsideration with extra documentation.  7 KPLC
  • A bill in the Legislature will allow public schools to offer annual mental health screenings to students in kindergarten through 12 when parents opt in, and schools must destroy the data within 30 days of notifying them.
