COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank kicked off its summer feeding program on June 2 to offer free breakfast and lunch to eligible children at five local centers. Meals are served from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday until July 25 or August 1 — service is paused on June 19 and July 4.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • A racehorse jockey was arrested after Saturday’s races at Delta Downs Racetrack and Casino in Vinton when 41-year-old Ricardo Hernandez-Perez used a battery-operated shocking device on his horse and tried to flee — he was later processed at Calcasieu Correctional Center for violating LA RS 4:175D.  The American Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Four days of Juneteenth celebrations will take place in Southwest Louisiana with events spread across several parishes. In Lake Charles, Family Fit Day will begin on Monday, June 16 at the MLK Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m and a parade, cook-off and concert is set for Thursday, June 19 at the Lake Charles Event Center—other festivities include Senior Bingo on Tuesday and Movie Under the Stars on Wednesday.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camp ResQ will begin next month in Sulphur and will let high school girls train with female firefighters and police to learn firefighting, EMS, defensive tactics, and investigative skills. The camp will run from July 14 through July 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., include a visit to a jail and 911 center, and have registration close on July 11 at 5 p.m.—only 20 girls can join.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lake Charles Police Department conducted active shooter training at Pearl Watson Elementary School yesterday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. with many law enforcement vehicles on campus — further exercises are set for June 6, June 9, and June 13.  7 KPLC

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Counselor Joel Daugherty said empty nest syndrome marks a hard change for parents when kids leave home. He advised that they focus on growth and new roles as friends rather than strict caregivers—helping parents work through grief and build new bonds—so they can find joy in this next chapter.  7 KPLC
