  • The inaugural tug-of-war event, Battle in the Bluff, will take place on June 14 at the Moss Bluff Soccer Complex with team weigh-ins at 9 a.m. and contests beginning at 11 a.m. Participants from families, schools, businesses, law enforcement, and military groups will compete for a $500 prize per contest with vendors, games, and a robot dog demonstration — designed to build teamwork and strength — throughout the day.  The American Press

  • Koozie’s Bar and Grill manager Holden Cates said he is preparing his staff and customers today by sharing hurricane guides with emergency numbers plus coordinating with vendors as hurricane season begins in Lake Charles.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Vinton jockey, Ricardo Hernandez-Perez, 41, was arrested Saturday at Delta Downs Racetrack and Casino for allegedly using a battery-operated device to unnaturally stimulate his horse — he was booked into Calcasieu Correctional Center after attempting to discard the device during post-race checks.  7 KPLC
  • Calcasieu Correctional Center booked nine individuals on May 31 for charges including battery, domestic abuse, DUI, and drug-related offenses (with suspects from Lake Charles, Vinton, and Dallas) as detailed in the arrest report.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee cut $50 million from Gov. Landry’s LA GATOR private school voucher program, leaving $44 million to cover tuition for 6,000 students even as the governor pressed for more funding—while the Senate also added hundreds of millions for Medicaid reimbursements pending federal approval and set aside sums for university debt relief and local jail support in the state budget due by June 12.   7 KPLC
