  • Lake Charles is hosting the free Phillips 66 STEM Family Fun Day this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Drew Park (416 Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive), where kids can join hands-on science activities and enjoy snacks.  Gator 99.5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jellystone Park will host a free Swamp Pop concert on Saturday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. at its pavilion, featuring Ryan Foret & Foret Tradition while families enjoy camping and outdoor fun all weekend.  Gator 99.5
  • The 2026 Coushatta Crossroads Festival in Kinder will occur in July at the Coushatta Casino Resort pavilion — event doors open at noon with music beginning at 1:00 p.m. and 10 top Cajun and Zydeco acts performing throughout the day.  Gator 99.5
  • A Block off Broadway Community Theatre will stage 'Steel Magnolias' at the Strand Theater — 432 N. Main St. — on June 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 7 p.m. with matinees on June 7 and 14 at 2 p.m.; tickets are available on Facebook and at the box office.  The American Press

  • Gov. Jeff Landry and Cenla economic leaders announced an AI data center coming soon to serve local industries (details on location and timeline are pending).  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paranika Ethakota, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at T.S. Cooley Elementary School in Lake Charles, advanced from the first preliminary round of the National Spelling Bee on Tuesday, May 26 by correctly spelling 'étouffée' + answering a skin-related vocabulary question before the contest continues through Thursday.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jeff Landry and state leaders are set to discuss teacher pay raises today at 11:30 a.m. after voters rejected amendments that would have made the raises permanent for teachers and support workers.  7 KPLC
  • Jeff Davis Water and Sewer Commission No. 1 earned an A rating (score of 101) from the Louisiana Department of Health after upgrades and testing, officials said. The district, serving 3,300 customers across Jeff Davis, Calcasieu and Cameron parishes, faces aging infrastructure challenges and plans repairs as funding permits.  The American Press

  • Terry Grice, a renter on 12th Street, saw termites swarm his living room and bedroom; after his maintenance request was ignored, he packed up with his daughter — city inspectors found no violations while the homeowner promised a refund of his rent and deposit.  7 KPLC

  • Defending champion Ike Little from Hackberry High, riding at the Finals Rodeo at Burton Complex, seeks to win two state titles in boys cutting and reined cow horse. He faces tough rival (Colburn LeDoux) as recent rounds wrap up and new events begin Thursday.  The American Press
  • DeQuincy cowboy Ty LaVergne, the defending state bull riding champion, will compete at the Louisiana High School Finals Rodeo this week. He sits in fourth place with 46 points and must overcome a nine-point gap to secure a top finish among his competitors.  The American Press
