  • Carry The Load SWLA will hold a lakeside tribute at the new Southwest Louisiana Children’s Museum at Port Wonder starting at 3 p.m. on Friday — the event includes a ceremony to honor veterans, first responders and fallen heroes and a 1.5-mile walk at 4 p.m.  Gator 99.5

  • A 6-year-old special needs child drowned in Toledo Bend Lake on May 19 after leaving a residence on Dogwood Drive near Lanan Bay cove, and the mother (27, of Many) was arrested and booked on a felony charge for cruelty to juveniles (she was on probation from a 2023 arrest).  7 KPLC
  • A KPLC viewer’s surveillance camera recorded the sound of dozens of gunshots just after midnight in the University neighborhood, and police are investigating the incident.  7 KPLC
  • Overnight on May 20th, more than 40 gunshots rang out at a house party in the University neighborhood of south Lake Charles—claiming one life—and police are investigating the incident.  7 KPLC
  • Lake Charles police are investigating a deadly shooting in the University neighborhood after video footage showed the scene—details about victims and motives remain unknown.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SOWELA’s clinical medical assistant program will begin on July 1 at the Main Campus in Lake Charles, teaching skills for bedside nursing care to prepare students for work in hospitals, care facilities, or home health agencies—classes run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and include certifications such as OSHA 10 Bloodborne Pathogens, EKG, and CPR.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Troy Romero of Jennings proposed a bill to impose a mandatory minimum two-year jail term for drivers who flee the scene of a crash causing severe injury or death — the measure advanced from the Senate Judiciary Committee in response to a 2022 hit and run that killed a bicyclist.  7 KPLC
  • Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple avoided a major change on Tuesday when Senate Bill 214 to convert his job into an appointed one was withdrawn by Sen. Royce Duplessis — he said he lacked the votes needed. Temple, elected without opposition in 2023, said he supports letting voters decide insurance rates rather than a governor-appointed official setting them.  The Advocate
