CULTURE NEWS

  • The Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery transforms each Memorial Day and Veterans Day into a 1.4-mile Avenue of Flags featuring 1,270 American flags and a History Walk exhibit tracing the U.S. flag's evolution. Volunteers will meet at 6 a.m. Monday to raise the flags ahead of the 7 a.m. public opening.  The American Press
  • Kat Daley, a McNeese graduate from Beaumont, took fun graduation photos with a giant alligator named Big Al. The photos, taken by Laura Oglesbee Photography in Lake Charles, show her posing close to the alligator + adding a wild twist to her senior pictures.  Gator 99.5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese University named State Sen. Mike Reese as its ninth president today by the ULS Board of Supervisors after he was chosen following finalist interviews in Baton Rouge. The new leader, who also heads the Reese Companies (a transportation and logistics group), is set to guide the university forward.  7 KPLC
  • SOWLEA celebrated its first paralegal studies program graduates on Tuesday, May 19 at its Lake Charles campus, marking a milestone in local legal education.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state audit found a fundraiser discrepancy exceeding $5,600 at E.K. Key Elementary in Calcasieu (spring 2025) that led to a criminal investigation, while a separate review of Jeff Davis Parish highlighted eight financial findings including improper use of grant funds.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • The McNeese Cowgirls ended their season with a 5-1 loss to UConn Saturday in College Station, and they overcame injuries and suspensions to clinch their 10th conference title & NCAA Tournament bid.  The American Press
  • Isaiah Keller helped McNeese State boost his season by raising his average to .327 with 10 home runs as the Cowboys advance to the SLC Championship series against Lamar tomorrow in Beaumont. His deep faith and hard work fueled a true turnaround.  The American Press
