- ➤ The American Red Cross of Louisiana provided free smoke detectors and fire safety tips to homes in Lake Charles that have had many fire calls and 34 fire fatalities this year. Twelve volunteers and eight employees helped assemble go bags with 18—22 smoke alarms each, fire preparedness packets, and checklists to boost community safety. 7 KPLC
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On May 16th, Calcasieu Correctional Center booked several people from Lake Charles and neighboring towns on charges that included drug offenses, domestic abuse, parole violations, and immigration detainers—KPLC reported the arrests covering a range of ages from 18 to 61. 7 KPLC
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ On Dec. 3, 1926, Lake Charles marked its first formal port opening with a grand parade and live music as dignitaries and visitors gathered for the celebration. Nearly 100 years later, the port remains a key part of the local economy by generating over $34 million in annual tax revenue (a milestone for the city). The American Press
