COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace is hosting a Build a Bed day tomorrow, May 16, in Sulphur to build over 30 beds for local kids in need + volunteers must be 12 or older, with minors joined by a guardian, to sand, stain, and assemble beds so children have a safe place to rest.  7 KPLC
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace invites local volunteers to help provide a safe place for children to sleep. The program offers residents a chance to support community efforts and strengthen bonds in Lake Charles.  7 KPLC
  • The city and Sasol’s Nature in Focus initiative will host Down on the Farm from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16 at Tuten Park, 3801 Nelson Road. The free event offers children and families interactive farm activities and a live petting zoo to explore nature.  The American Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers say if Amendment 3 fails this weekend, teacher stipends may not be funded — educators in our schools may lose an extra $2,000 per year and a $250 raise. The amendment would also dissolve three education funds and address $2 billion in retirement debt.  The American Press
  • Calcasieu Parish voters will decide on two school bond issues on Saturday. One proposal funds upgrades for Iowa Middle and High while the other advances new facilities at several District 34 schools (polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.).  The American Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Shauna Levy (Tulane Weight Loss Center) said Louisiana patients face a coverage gap as more people use GLP-1 weight loss injections while insurance favors bariatric surgery; her surgery numbers have stayed steady even with a 24 percent rise in prescriptions nationwide.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • McNeese beat Nicholls 11-3 in the opening Hammond Bracket game of the Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday, with outfielder Isaiah Keller hitting his ninth home run and pitcher Eric Nachtsheim leading the team. The win extended the Cowboys' season-high winning streak.  The American Press
  • No. 3 Mangham defeated No. 1 Welsh 11-7 on Wednesday, May 14 at McMurry Park after scoring seven runs in the third inning. Reggie Robinson, who had three extra-base hits and two RBIs, was named the most outstanding player.  The American Press
  • No. 2 Westlake beat No. 1 Sterlington 5 to 3 in Game 1 of the Non-select Division III series at McMurry Park on Thursday, May 14. Coach Blake Reed said his team — adjusting for Game 2 at 11 a.m. today — is chasing its first state title since 1996.  The American Press
  • Legendary McNeese football coach Bobby Keasler (Hall of Famer) died on Tuesday, May 12 at age 80 after leading the Cowboys to four Southland Conference titles, and funeral arrangements are pending in Lake Charles.  7 KPLC
  • Glenmora beat Pitkin 3-2 in the Class B state championship game in Sulphur on Wednesday — the Wildcats won their first state title while Pitkin left nine runners stranded during their final rally attempt.  The American Press
  • McNeese State Cowgirls clinched their record 10th Southland Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament after a tough loss in April. They rallied to win 17 of their last 20 games — proving they remain a top team this season.  The American Press
  • Today, McNeese State Cowgirls (making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in three years) open NCAA Tournament play at Davis Diamond in College Station against Arizona State at 3:30 p.m. after clinching their 10th Southland Conference championship.  The American Press
  • Westlake Rams will face Sterlington's defending state champion Panthers in a best-of-three state championship series starting at 11 a.m. today at McMurry Park in Sulphur — their improved depth may tip the scales in their favor.  The American Press
