  • Alex Carter, a British sailor whose vessel Acid Rain washed ashore in Johnson Bayou, flew from London to Lake Charles after a container ship and local help rescued him. He is now working with community members (including Cynthia LeBlanc and the Terrys) to repair the battered boat and sail home in the future.  The American Press

  • In 1981, residents in Elizabeth were shocked when Boise Southern’s paper mill closed its doors—forcing 400 workers to find new jobs at Fort Polk and offshore oil fields. Four years later, the mill was torn down and former staff gathered to remember the industry that once built the town.  The American Press

  • Senate committees are holding hearings on car insurance bills as Gov. Landry pushes for House Bill 148 to pass unchanged while Insurance Commissioner Temple opposes changes that could let him reject rate hikes—Senate President Henry said some pro-industry measures may move forward. Gov. Landry warned he will call a special session if the Senate does not pass his favored bill before the session ends—this contest may impact high auto insurance rates across Louisiana.  The Advocate
  • After 21 years of service, Houston River Department Assistant Fire Chief Jimmie Cormier retired following a ceremony on Saturday in Sulphur. Fire Chief Dean Lappe presented him with a commemorative plaque to honor his legacy.  7 KPLC
