BUSINESS NEWS

  • Maritime industry veteran Gregory Rusovich launched UTC Transoceanic (UTC Transo) in late April as a joint venture with UTC Overseas to channel industrial projects to Louisiana ports. The New Orleans firm will focus on moving breakbulk cargo to local jobsites and plans to hire over 20 local workers.  The Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • This June, local venues host concerts. Golden Nugget Casino Resort presents Frank Foster on June 6, Todd Rundgren on June 20, and Dustin Slay on June 27. Coushatta Casino Resort offers pop and powwow shows on June 6 and 12–13, while Jellystone hosts swamp pop and zydeco.  Gator 99.5
  • Blues Traveler will perform at 8:00 p.m. on May 9 at the L'Auberge Casino Resort Lake Charles Event Center. The concert is for audiences 21 and older and will feature classic hits and unexpected surprises.  Gator 99.5
  • The 39th Cajun Music and Food Festival, organized by the Lake Charles Chapter of the Cajun French Music Association, is set for Saturday, July 18 at Burton Coliseum in south Lake Charles, with performances starting at 9:30 a.m. and free entry for children (10 and under).  Gator 99.5
  • Christian Youth Theater presents Tuck Everlasting The Musical at McNeese State’s F.G. Bulber Auditorium (4205 Ryan St.) with shows at 7 p.m. today, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday. The musical features kids in a story about choosing between living fully and remaining young.  The American Press

  • Gas prices in Louisiana reached over $4 a gallon on Thursday as summer travel picked up—parishes outside Orleans and East Baton Rouge saw steeper increases. AAA reported the state's average was the highest since July 2022 even though Louisiana still remains among the cheapest in the country.  The Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese is accepting summer and fall semester registrations with a summer deadline on June 3 and fall classes starting Aug. 24; students should meet with advisors, complete fee payments by Aug. 26, and apply online (using FAFSA code 002017 for financial aid).  7 KPLC
  • LSU and Southern University systems will join a U.S. Census pilot study (using anonymous data from the National Student Clearinghouse) to track if Louisiana grads work in jobs matching their fields of study. The findings may guide universities in linking higher education attainment to career success statewide.  The Advocate
  • The University of Louisiana System is streaming a review of applicant materials at 10 a.m. today to select semifinalists for McNeese State University’s presidential search, with interviews scheduled on campus May 12 and 13 and the president potentially named on May 19 in Baton Rouge.  7 KPLC
  • Mrs. Sue Jacobs celebrated her 60-year career teaching math in Lake Charles on May 7. Her decades of dedication have inspired generations of students and enriched local education.  7 KPLC
  • Sowela Technical College now offers hands-on training on a new process simulator — valued at $451,477 — and an upgraded lab in its School of Industrial Technology. The update, chiefly funded by an anonymous donor, equips students with high-tech skills for modern industrial work.  The American Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The LHSAA State Baseball Tournament will take place from May 11 to 16 at McMurry Park (300 S. Hazel St. in Sulphur), where high school teams will compete and college scouts are expected to attend.  7 KPLC
  • The Cowboys reached the postseason with a 1-0 win over Northwestern State at Joe Miller Ballpark on May 7; they will face Northwestern at 6 p.m. today as they work to secure a higher seed (head coach Justin Hill praised their strong pitching).  The American Press
  • The Cowgirls beat Lamar 1-0 in 10 innings on Thursday; a key double by Maddie Weeks scored Adriana Mireles for the only run, putting the team one win away from an NCAA Tournament return. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at Joe Miller Field.  The American Press
