COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Drew Park was formally dedicated to the community on Wednesday, Apr. 29, marking a milestone in local history. The park will offer a new gathering space for residents.  7 KPLC
  • On April 14, a woman doing yard work north of Westlake reported seeing a tall creature with dark fur near the Houston River when she observed it running from her view — Bigfoot expert Matthew Moneymaker followed up on the sighting while residents noted unusual pet behavior after the incident.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown at Sundown begins Friday with its 26th season of 6–9 p.m. concerts over four weekends. Due to inclement weather, this week’s show moves indoors to Central School Arts and Humanities Center (809 Kirby St.), while food and art vendors continue supporting local causes.  The American Press
  • Lake Charles hosts a weekend of events. On Friday, Mark Chesnutt performs at Golden Nugget at 8:30 p.m.; Saturday holds a free crawfish boil-off at Mary's Lounge at 11 a.m. and Chicago at Golden Nugget; Sunday features live music at Touloulou’s Beach from Yachtley Crew, Yachtsea & Catalina Wine Mixer.  Gator 99.5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials with the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced work on two new artificial reefs is underway at Port Wonder and Cutoff Point to restore local fishery habitats (the modules are known as Cajun corral) with completion expected by the end of this week.  The American Press

  • Reins of Hope is launching free wellness support for veterans + first responders effective today, offering mental health and recovery resources at designated community centers. The program aims to help participants manage stress and improve overall wellness.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • McNeese State Cowgirls begin their postseason play at home today at Joe Miller Field at 11 a.m. against No. 7 Stephen F. Austin as part of a double-elimination semifinal bracket, with coach Landreneau expressing confidence after a recent tough loss.  The American Press
  • Lake Charles College Prep won its third consecutive boys Region II-3A track and field championship on Tuesday, April 28 at McNeese State's track complex (senior Derrick White swept the 100, 200, and 400-meter dashes).  The American Press
  • J.J. LaBove threw a javelin 204 feet to win the District 4-1A title (his first throw over 200 feet) and join an elite group of throwers from our region yesterday. He will defend his 1A state title on May 7 at LSU.  The American Press
  • The 2026 LHSAA Softball State Tournament is set for this weekend in Sulphur at North Frasch Park, marking its 25th consecutive year there. Tickets cost $18 plus fees and must be purchased online before attending the Saturday and Sunday games.  Gator 99.5
  • Due to weather delays, the 2026 LHSAA State Softball Tournament has been rescheduled and will be held on a new date pending an update.  7 KPLC
