CRIME NEWS

  • A Lake Charles man was arrested for allegedly passing counterfeit money when detectives with the U.S. Secret Service Task Force located him at a local restaurant and found over $600 in fake bills along with suspected drugs in his vehicle—he faces charges of monetary instrument abuse, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and drug paraphernalia with a bond set at $82,000.  The American Press
  • A Lake Charles man admitted to using fake money at a restaurant last week and was arrested by deputies—detectives found over $600 in counterfeit bills and suspected drugs on him.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rising country star Chase Matthew will perform live at the Golden Nugget’s Grand Event Center in Lake Charles on Friday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m.—tickets start at $20.  Gator 99.5
  • Ukrainian folk group YAGÓDY—on its first U.S. tour—will perform an ethnodrama at the F.G. Bulber Auditorium at 7 p.m. April 24 as part of the McNeese Banners Series to honor Ukraine's spirit. Tickets cost $20 with free access for eligible groups.  The American Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will host its fourteenth annual Boating Education Lagniappe Day on April 26 at 1025 Tom Watson Road in Lake Charles from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The course will cover boat selection, navigation rules and certification while providing lunch and door prizes, with registration on a first-come, first-served basis.  7 KPLC
  • SOWELA Technical Community College offers an associate degree in Chemical Laboratory Technology that trains lab technicians to test solids, liquids, and gases and provides internships with local labs (typical starting salaries exceed $60,000). The hands-on program simulates an industrial lab environment (scholarships and financial aid are available) and registration is open for Summer and Fall.  7 KPLC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Calcasieu River is listed as one of the nation’s most at-risk rivers as many industrial sites have broken federal pollution rules—American Rivers says toxic waste has left it on life support. The EPA has fined these companies $2.19 million and is being urged to update old pollution standards to protect local wildlife and public health.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lake Charles Police and the DEA will host their 28th drug take-back event on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Walmart Neighborhood Market (2011 Ryan Street) to safely dispose of dangerous, expired, and unused prescription drugs.  7 KPLC
  • State Representative Larry Bagley has reintroduced a bill that would remove annual inspection stickers from most personal vehicles if approved, a change intended to save drivers time and money. The bill maintains inspection and fee requirements for commercial vehicles, school buses, and others under federal rules + officers can still perform safety checks if a car appears unsafe.  Gator 99.5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Louisiana hospitals are on alert after officials confirmed two measles cases in New Orleans, with one patient in isolation after recent international travel while the other is in recovery. Hospitals are training staff and reviewing protocols—vaccination rates have fallen below herd immunity in some parishes—raising risks of local spread if the virus is introduced.  The Advocate
