BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ball’s Fried Chick-N will open its doors on April 28 at 10 a.m. at 606 Enterprise Blvd in Lake Charles. The restaurant closed nearly five years ago after Hurricane Laura hit and its reopening was delayed by a tornado last year — it will serve its famous fried chicken until 6 p.m. or until sold out.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 15, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested multiple individuals on charges including theft, domestic abuse battery, and drug possession — with suspects such as Julie Clair Aron and Jessica Michelle Sports among those held.  The American Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has designated parts of La. 27 and La. 82 south of the Intracoastal Waterway as a wildflower area to preserve blooms along the Creole Nature Trail. The agency installed Wildflower Area signs and will limit tall vegetation—ensuring safe road conditions and protecting native plants.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will host the free Annual Senior Citizen’s Fishing Rodeo on May 1 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Farm Pond behind the Calcasieu Correctional Center on E. Broad Street in Lake Charles—participants aged 55 and older must bring their own chairs, fans and one fishing pole while help with baiting lines, fish removal and refreshments will be provided.  7 KPLC
  • At tonight's city council meeting, Sulphur officials proposed raising water, sewer, and trash rates after an annual review of costs and inflation—with a proposed water rate increase of a little over 7% (overall utility rates would rise 4.39%) and exemptions for residents in the assistance program; the council voted three to two on the proposal, which will be discussed next month.  7 KPLC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Joe Dumars, a Natchitoches native who played at McNeese State, is finalizing a deal to lead basketball operations for the Pelicans as they replace former executive David Griffin—his record with the Pistons adds to his strong Louisiana ties.  7 KPLC
  • The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has released the 2025 baseball playoff brackets for high schools, and the state tournament runs from May 13 to 17 at McMurry Park in Sulphur. Divisions I, II, and III will hold semifinal best-of-three series on campus—while the championship series will be held at McMurry Park.  Gator 99.5
  • McNeese Cowboys will face eighth-ranked LSU Tuesday night in Baton Rouge as they test their record 12-game win streak and try to boost their NCAA Tournament hopes — a win that follows a comeback finish against Incarnate Word. The game is seen as a key moment in their strong start to the season.  Gator 99.5
