COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Camp Corral is a charity golf tournament that will take place on May 3 at L’Auberge Golf Club in Lake Charles to help cover costs for children of wounded or disabled veterans—teams of 4 can register for $500 to join the event featuring a raffle, door prizes, mulligans and a hole-in-one contest offering a new Toyota as a prize.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • Lake Charles Police arrested two more people in connection with the March 9 death of Daniel Hernandez, found with a gunshot wound in a wrecked vehicle on McNeese Street—bringing the total charged to four, including 19-year-old Colton Ryan Smith, who was arrested on April 9 in Minneapolis on a second-degree murder warrant with a bond set at $950,000, while a juvenile and Authur Lee Jack were also charged as the investigation continues.  The American Press
  • Lake Charles Police arrested two suspects for a deadly shooting and crash on McNeese Street that killed Daniel Hernandez—on April 9, 19-year-old Colton Ryan Smith from Vinton was caught in Minneapolis with a stolen vehicle and charged with second-degree murder, and on April 8 a juvenile was arrested on the same charge with police still looking into the case.  7 KPLC
  • Lake Charles Police said that on April 4 at 11:14 p.m., a gray Ford F150 traveling west on 6th Street hit a bicyclist and fled without stopping—officials now ask the public for any identifying details.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers introduced education bills after the session began Monday—proposals address teacher pay following a recent amendment rejection and include changes to school funding, standardized tests and TOPS scholarship rules. The session will continue until June 12 with voting on these measures expected in the coming weeks.  The Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced that 426 acres between Reeves and LeBlanc in Allen Parish will become the Flatwoods Savanna Wildlife Management Area and will open to the public on July 1. It is the only known site of mature longleaf pine in southwest Louisiana — the area will offer hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing and outdoor education opportunities.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Donavan Mansfield from the U.S. Department of Defense announced that the remains of Pfc. Harry LeBert, a World War II Marine killed on Saipan, were identified and will soon be flown home to Jennings for burial at the SWLA Veterans Cemetery. Memorial services with military honors are tentatively scheduled for July 3 — his family and officials plan to honor his service.  The American Press
  • The Calcasieu Parish School Board will receive nearly $7.1 million in hurricane relief funding that will pay for repairs at Barbe High from Hurricane Laura damage—over $1 million of the funds will repair the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport from Hurricane Ida damage.  7 KPLC
