COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In 1980, Boys Village held a capital improvements campaign that raised $381,426—$27,426 over its goal—to build two new group homes, renovate a transitional care home, move staff cabins, and rebuild a dorm that increased its capacity from 24 to 45 boys. The center later celebrated with a country fair featuring rides, games, and autographs from former Buffalo Bills quarterback Joe Ferguson.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators filed 21 bills to lower auto insurance costs, though Gov. Landry and Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple differ on several proposals despite agreeing on 16 measures. Gov. Landry, who held his news conference Wednesday, said he will sign a bill for new rules (no pay no play and increased damage awards for uninsured drivers) as the session begins Monday, April 14.  The American Press
  • Gov. Jeff Landry unveiled a comprehensive plan yesterday to curb rising insurance costs by holding both insurance companies and trial lawyers accountable. He said he will sign previously vetoed bills and introduce changes such as limiting lawyer ads and stopping firms from adding ad fees to premiums—steps that build on past legislative efforts.  The American Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • On April 12, McNeese won its 11th straight game by defeating Incarnate Word 8—1 at Sullivan Field, improving its record to 26—5. The Cowboys remain one game behind Houston Christian and will try to complete a series sweep today at 1 p.m.  The American Press
  • Grand Lake baseball head coach Tyler Alton held a summer league to give his young Hornets time to mesh and prepare for the high school season—playing seven or eight games that boosted both new and older players. The team is 20-6 and has won 17 of its last 19 games, with standout freshman Law Faulk batting .468 and senior Rylan Young achieving an 8-0 record on the mound.  The American Press
  • Barbe High senior pole vaulter Carter Hooks cleared a personal best of 15 feet at the B.S. Walker Relays at Sulphur High School on April 10th, tying for third in the state and finishing second in Class 5A. He now plans to use a 15—6 pole as he aims to clear 16 feet in his next meet.  The American Press
  • McNeese wrapped up its spring training yesterday at Cowboy Stadium where running back Tre’Vonte Citizen scored three touchdowns—coaches said they will review performances and explore selective transfers as summer workouts begin.  The American Press
  • LSU lost Saturday as Auburn won 4-2 to clinch the weekend series. LSU will try to salvage the series today at 2 p.m. on SECN+ with Chase Shores pitching while Auburn has yet to name its starter.  The American Press
