- ➤ Rick Sarro and his wife Melanie received a phone call a few days ago from two men who claimed he would be arrested and told him to keep his phone active, but after contacting a friend at the sheriff’s office they realized it was a scam. 7 KPLC
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Teacher Meghan LeBert, 39, taught English for 16 years at Sam Houston High School and said her classroom was a safe space where students could learn without worry—she broke down hard ideas and set clear rules—and she felt inspired by a caring teacher and by helping her brother with autism. She graduated from Lafayette High School and studied English education at McNeese State University to prepare local students for their future. The American Press

- ➤ Today at 10:30 a.m., Audubon Aquarium rescue will release nine rare Kemp’s ridley sea turtles at Holly Beach (part of the Keep Cameron Parish Beautiful Beach Cleanup) and invite the public to watch. The turtles were rescued last fall when they were cold-stunned off Massachusetts and received long-term care in New Orleans before their release. 7 KPLC

- ➤ Sen. Bill Cassidy called on Thursday evening from the Senate floor for FEMA to undo cuts to a program that paid for levee work and home raising to help protect Louisiana from floods and hurricanes. He said stopping the program affects 148 projects worth $721,281,559 and wastes taxpayer money—calling for the law to be honored. The Advocate
- ➤ The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury approved new contracts for a $51 million judicial complex in downtown Lake Charles that will combine courtrooms, offices and public spaces into a 100,000-square-foot building on Kirby Street. The project will replace several older buildings and last 28 months while using 31-35% local labor. 7 KPLC
- ➤ Several OMV field offices are open today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lake Charles and other cities to help residents obtain a REAL ID before the May 7th deadline; additional offices will open on May 3rd (walk-ins accepted). 7 KPLC
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Albert Richert, a pediatrician with over 20 years of experience, said whooping cough starts like a cold then worsens to severe coughing that can make breathing hard — his office reported several cases in the past year. State Surgeon General Dr. Ralph Abraham confirmed that two infants died recently as vaccine events ended and experts warned that immunity fades over time. 7 KPLC
