COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renovation of the old Welsh High School home economics cottage is nearly complete—friends of the Welsh Museum said the project is about 89% done and will finish by the end of May with a dedication ceremony planned for June. The renovated building will be renamed the Hazel Benoit Center for Home and Family and will offer community programs at West Hudspeth and South Kennedy.  The American Press

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 6, 2025, Calcasieu Correctional Center booked several suspects including Derrick Moore from Port Arthur charged with a third offense DWI and Lake Charles residents facing charges such as burglary, drug possession, domestic abuse and battery — additional arrests involved firearm violations, in-state detainers and resisting officers.  7 KPLC
  • On April 5, Calcasieu Correctional Center in Lake Charles booked 10 individuals, with six arrested for illegal use of weapons or dangerous instruments, one held on a probation detainer, and three charged with domestic abuse and related offenses + all suspects are local residents from Lake Charles and Sulphur +.  7 KPLC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chevron was ordered to pay $744.6 million to restore damage to southeast Louisiana coastal wetlands after a jury ruled its long-running actions violated state coastal management laws—this verdict may lead to further lawsuits as Chevron plans to appeal.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • For nearly two decades, Calcasieu Parish has used an Adult Drug Treatment Court to help non-violent offenders stop using drugs and rebuild family ties — the program follows a four-phase, 18-month process with daily drug screenings and house arrest until phase three. Judge David Ritchie co-founded the court to protect children from the effects of drug abuse and noted the program’s low recidivism and many drug-free babies.  The American Press
