Good morning, Lake Charles. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 31st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots South Central Chapter hosted a meeting at Chennault this past weekend as women pilots from several states gathered to review the airport’s improvements and learn about upcoming pilot training courses—veteran flyers and student pilots shared their flight experiences. The group, which began in 1929 with 99 charter members, plans to grow its membership by its 100th anniversary.  7 KPLC
  • Ward Four Recreation District One is nearing completion of the Lazy Gator Water Park in Westlake on a $25 million, five-acre project—featuring a 25-meter pool, a 1,000-foot lazy river and a beach volleyball court. The team plans to open the park for summer and will train new staff before the grand opening even though the timeline has been extended.  The American Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Marion 'Brad' Martin, a nonviolent offender who completed a pretrial diversion and recovery program on March 28, had his charges dismissed after meeting requirements that included inpatient counseling, sober living and job commitments—he said the program helped him reconnect with his daughter and rebuild his life. The program offers nonviolent offenders a chance to start over by receiving treatment and support before returning to society.  The Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill will be discussed soon that could make it a crime to intentionally expose others to incurable sexually transmitted infections — such as HIV and genital herpes — with penalties of up to 10 years in prison or a $5,000 fine while exposures to curable infections will be punished as misdemeanors. State Rep. Pat Moore introduced House Bill 76 after a Louisiana woman said she contracted herpes from her husband who misled her about his condition.  The Advocate
  • Louisiana voters rejected four constitutional amendments—including Amendment 2 pushed for by Gov. Jeff Landry—on Saturday with over 60% voting no. Analysts said the result reflects mixed opposition from both conservative and progressive groups and signals voter dissatisfaction rather than a long-term setback to the governor’s plans.  The Advocate
