COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tommy Little, a retired Sulphur man, has volunteered with 11 local organizations since 2016 after Hurricane Harvey to bring food and hygiene kits to seniors and veterans. The Sulphur Senior Center said he organizes red beans and rice + meals for those in need while his efforts earn him recognition as a Champion of Service.  7 KPLC
  • Live at the Lakefront returned today at the Arcade Amphitheater where local music, art and cuisine were showcased — the family-friendly festival runs for two Fridays with concerts by Justin Martindale and The Backstabbers and The Loaded 44rz and will move inside if rain falls.  The American Press

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 59-year-old motorcyclist died on Wednesday near Starks when he reentered the eastbound lane on La. 12 to make a U-turn and struck an 18-wheeler — state police are investigating the crash.  7 KPLC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Calcasieu Correctional Center booking report from March 27th showed several Lake Charles residents were arrested on charges ranging from DWI and drug offenses to probation violations and vehicular homicide — other arrestees from nearby areas faced charges including aggravated flight, theft and murder.  7 KPLC
  • A Lake Charles man and his wife were arrested after detectives began investigating a tip on March 23 that he had raped three family members under 12 and that she, a mandated reporter, failed to report the abuse—Jared Moreno faces three counts of first degree rape and aggravated rape while Lova Moreno faces a charge for failure to report a felony.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese State University will offer several nutrition programs this fall that prepare students to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. The School of Agricultural Sciences will provide a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences with concentrations in Nutrition and Dietetics or Nutrition and Food Sciences and a Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences that includes an 18-month internship with at least 1,200 hours of supervised practice in hospitals, community programs, and food service operations.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lake Charles said that two-way traffic will resume on West Prien Lake Road from Cove Lane south to Ihles Road at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 31—crews will keep working over the next several weeks. The widening project will add a bike path and sidewalks—improving road, drainage, water and sewer services.  7 KPLC
  • Residents in Lake Charles can give feedback on the new Safety Action Plan aimed at reducing fatal and severe crashes on local roads. Two community meetings will be held on Thursday, April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at MLK Community Center—2009 North Simmons St.—and University Park Community Center—1001 Central Parkway.  7 KPLC
  • Louisiana residents who fly must get a Real ID by May 7 — the new rule means a regular license will not work at airport security without another approved ID, and travelers must bring a birth certificate or passport, Social Security proof, and two documents showing their address to the OMV for a fee. Those who do not plan to fly or enter federal buildings can wait until their travel needs change.  Gator 99.5
