Good morning, Lake Charles. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new park opened in east Lake Charles at Anita Drive and Ryder Avenue with a splash pad, gazebo, seniors trail + open green space giving local kids a new place to play. EDUCATION NEWS

  • State superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley toured Johnson Bayou High School on Tuesday morning and praised the school's strong gains and local educators' resilience — noting that rising test scores in Cameron Parish and a seven-year gap in similar visits underscored a bright educational and economic outlook. He said the improvements could lead to a better future for the community.  7 KPLC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers are testing new tools such as drones, tail Doppler radar and StreamSondes to collect vital data from rapidly growing hurricanes after 34 rapid intensification events were recorded last season. FINANCE NEWS

  • Legal Corner explained that if a debtor cannot pay a credit card bill, the creditor or collector may file a lawsuit that can lead to wage garnishment or bank account levies if the debtor does not respond by the deadline—consumers are protected from unfair collection practices on personal debts by the FDCPA. The column also noted that employers with fewer than 15 employees are not covered by most EEOC laws.  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lake Charles Event Center sold over 7,000 tickets and saw a 75-percent rise in public events in its first quarter, marking its best first-quarter performance in ten years, according to Director of Community Services Michael Castille. The center credits the boost to its partnership with ASM Global and its easy access downtown.  7 KPLC
  • A concerned citizen discovered exposed skeletal remains in a neglected cemetery off North Prater Street—located between a residential area and the site of old Emmanuel Baptist Church—last month, prompting 7News to alert the Louisiana Cemetery Board.
