COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Good Shepherd is hosting its annual used book sale featuring over 25,000 new and used books available for bargain readers. The event is set for this weekend at its usual location & community members are encouraged to stop by for affordable finds.  7 KPLC
  • On Saturday, Trinity Baptist Church provided free lawn care services in University Place followed by a block party at University Park for residents. The event featured free hamburgers + drinks, games, face painting and kite-flying.  The American Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rum Revival Grand Tasting Festival returns to Lake Charles Saturday, March 28 at the Golden Nugget (3:00-7:00 p.m.), offering cocktail contests, samples of rums and tequilas, and Caribbean-inspired food that showcase the tropical spirit of the event.  Gator 99.5
  • Lake Charles welcomes the Jellystone RV Park and Resort’s jambalaya cookoff on Saturday, Mar. 28. Cooks will compete for the top prize while live music from Grammy-winning Steve Riley (The Mamou Playboys) promises a lively day of Cajun food and dance.  Gator 99.5
  • Families in Lake Charles are invited to a range of Easter events starting March 26. There will be egg hunts, family picnics, art activities and weekend celebrations at local venues, including Hillcrest Park and Jellystone RV Park, offering fun for all ages + opportunities to create holiday memories.  Gator 99.5
  • Rum Revival returns this weekend with a tasting event featuring Caribbean-inspired cocktails, rums, tequilas plus dishes by SWLA chefs. The festival will take place at the Golden Nugget (2550 Golden Nugget Boulevard) on Mar. 28 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  7 KPLC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • U.S. Gulf Coast LNG plants will boost shipments to cover global demand after damage at Qatar’s hub reduced gas supply; local Louisiana facilities are expanding output, with a 13% export increase at the Plaquemines plant that may push higher residential gas rates.  The American Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA's new guidelines on ethylene oxide emissions took effect on March 18 and set updated controls for 23 plants (including one in Lake Charles). The rule cuts emissions by 12 tons per year but leaves out air monitors, drawing mixed responses from local environmental advocates and industry leaders.  The Advocate

  • The Lake Charles Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission will host a solemn tribute to National Vietnam War Veterans Day at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28 at Veterans Memorial Park (north side of the Lake Charles Event Center grounds). Family and friends are invited to share remembrances of those who served.  The American Press
  • Calcasieu Parish OHSEP will host a public meeting on hazard mitigation planning on Tuesday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at its Training Classroom A (901 Lakeshore Dr., second floor) to gather local input on reducing risks from natural hazards.  The American Press
  • Lake Charles will host a tribute for National Vietnam War Veterans Day on Saturday, March 28 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park near the Event Center grounds, where the Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission will lead the event and invite family and friends to share remembrances with any weather changes announced as needed.  7 KPLC

  • The Cowgirls travel to Lafayette today at 6 p.m. to face Louisiana-Lafayette in a season opener as they seek improvement after several losses (McNeese coach James Landreneau said the team needs timely hits and strong defense).  The American Press
