  • Lake Charles celebrates St. Patrick’s Day today as MacFarlane’s Celtic Pub hosts an event with brunch at 6 a.m. + live music, a dachshund dash begins at 5 p.m., and Crying Eagle Brewing offers an all-day celebration with Irish drinks.  Gator 99.5
  • Monster trucks will roll into Lake Charles on Saturday, March 21. The Monster X Tour at the Lake Charles Event Center will feature USA-1, Loud and Dirty, Anger Management, Boss Gator and Lone Wolf with Pit Parties before shows, drone races and truck rides.  Gator 99.5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNeese’s Speech and Debate Team won an international title in Athens last week when they finished a content creation scavenger hunt — a milestone marking the team’s growth after rebuilding from COVID and Hurricane Laura.  7 KPLC
  • River Parishes Community College will host a free film industry training fair on Friday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Locals can learn skills in costumes, scenic practices + cinema lighting as part of a series that connects residents with film industry careers.  7 KPLC
  • Students at SOWELA University published a children’s book to fund a new scholarship program for local learners. The initiative, launched March 16, will boost financial aid options as part of the school’s ongoing efforts (official announcement).  7 KPLC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Wilford Carter introduced House Bill 554 to raise fines for healthcare facilities that break safety rules, while Senate Bill 273 will require clearer care plans for hospice patients. Lawmakers said the changes will hold facilities accountable for future violations.  7 KPLC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health experts say GLP-1 weight loss drugs come in two forms—an oral option taken on an empty stomach and less expensive, and a weekly injectable form with a higher dose but more side effects. They advise patients to use these drugs along with a balanced diet and exercise.  7 KPLC

  • McNeese women's basketball coach Ayla Guzzardo received a contract extension for five years worth $877,000 on Monday following a historic turnaround that earned the Cowgirls a postseason invitation on Sunday, and they will play Texas A&M on Thursday at 7 p.m.  The American Press
