  • Fire chief Johnathan Duff of Westlake has served the community since he turned 18 — inspired by his father’s legacy and local service — and he remains active in youth programs like baseball and fishing leagues. He encourages residents to volunteer with their local fire department.  7 KPLC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The free 2nd Annual South Beau Easter Festival will take place Saturday, March 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Lake Charles, offering live music, bounce houses, egg hunts, a petting zoo, and food from local vendors.  Gator 99.5
  • Central School Arts and Humanities Center in Lake Charles announced a new exhibit featuring John James Audubon on loan from the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. The exhibit—marking the first in a rotating series—highlights his legacy and is open today from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 809 Kirby St.  The American Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have risen nearly 40 cents per gallon compared to last week due to the conflict in the Middle East—but Louisiana drivers still pay roughly 25 cents less than the national average. AAA expects further daily increases until tensions ease, which may impact local businesses soon.  7 KPLC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A SWLA Women in Industry event held on March 5th at West Cal Event Center gave 92 high school students hands-on exposure to STEM careers through mock interviews and vendor booths — 70 local female leaders helped guide them to explore engineering and related fields.  The American Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Big tech companies, including Google and Microsoft, signed a pledge on Mar. 3 at the White House to cover electricity costs for AI data centers and shield ratepayers from rising bills. In Louisiana, the Public Service Commission will enforce protections while Entergy announced $800 million in savings over 20 years.  7 KPLC

  • The Marucci 1st Pitch Classic is a high school baseball showcase underway at McMurry Park in Sulphur from March 5 to 7. Admission is $15 and scouts are evaluating elite teams with All-Tournament Team recognition and Game Changer statistics.  7 KPLC
  • McNeese State University introduced the club sport STUNT earlier this year and is now ranked sixth nationally in the club division—its matches feature unique routines over four quarters that draw athletes from across the region and offer local high school stars valuable competitive experience.  7 KPLC
  • The Playbook update announced that the local boys state soccer team won the championship after a competitive state tournament. Fans and officials praised the team’s strong season as a milestone for local sports.  7 KPLC
